More than 7,000 heavily armed police surrounded the Incirlik airbase in Adana, southwest Turkey amid speculation that it was meant to thwart another coup attempt. The police came with armored personnel carriers as well as dump trucks.

1The coup attempt by a group of military officers in Turkey seems to have fizzled out. After several hours of tense standoff, the coup plotters were beaten back and the police and people were able to reclaim control. Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan who flew into Istanbul airport from his holiday said the military will be cleansed of these elements.

1There were no Eid celebrations in Baghdad as people mourned the death of more than 250 people in the deadliest terrorist attack since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. While the takfiri terrorists claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing, the real perpetrators are the Saudi, Qatari, Turkish regimes that provide support to terrorists. Beyond that, US rulers--Bush, Cheney et al--must be held directly responsible for such crimes.
