The United Nations recently released its report on the chemical attacks in Syria, confirming that such attacks had indeed taken place. According to the report, chemical weapons were used in five out of the seven attacks investigated by the UN and that the attacks targeted Syrian soldiers.
While the UN report did not name the party responsible for these attacks, the official investigation supported the narrative publicized by Russia and the Syrian government—that the chemical attacks were committed by the various militias dubbed “the Free Syrian Army,” with chemical weapons provided to them by Saudi Arabia.
Additionally, the American investigative journalist Seymour Hersh who is also a winner of the Pulitzer Prize, revealed in an article published on Sunday (December 15) for the London Review of Books that President Barack Obama lied to the American people when presenting news of the Syrian chemical attacks.
Hersh, who is known for exposing US government cover-ups of the My Lai and Abu Ghraib atrocities, said that Obama’s administration “cherry picked Intelligence” to present events in such a way as to give Washington an excuse to go to war against Syria.
Hersh noted the following in his report: “A former senior intelligence official told me that the Obama administration had altered the available information – in terms of its timing and sequence – to enable the president and his advisers to make intelligence retrieved days after the attack to make it look as if it had been picked up and analyzed in real time, as the attack was happening.
Hersh continued: “The same official said there was immense frustration inside the military and intelligence bureaucracy: ‘The guys are throwing their hands in the air and saying, ‘How can we help this guy’—Obama —‘when he and his cronies in the White House make up the intelligence as they go along?’”
In the report, Hersh also discussed how the US administration suppressed knowledge that Jabhat al-Nusra, a dangerous fundamentalist group, had acquired chemical weapons and the knowhow to make them. Officials knew that militants in the group had acquired sarin, but these same militants were never publicly fingered after sarin attacks took place on Syrian soil.
“Samantha Power, the US ambassador to the UN, even went so far as to hold a press conference as the US was attempting to build its fraudulent case against the Assad regime: ‘It’s very important to note that only the [Assad] regime possesses sarin, and we have no evidence that the opposition possesses sarin’.”
