Western Regimes Backtracking on Iran Nuclear Deal

Editor

Under pressure from the US, Western regimes are kowtowing to Donald Trump instead of upholding the agreement they signed with Iran in 2015. The agreement was arrived at after many years of painstaking negotiations.

Trump has denounced it as the “worst deal” ever and has demanded “fixing” it or he will not certify in May that Iran is in compliance with it. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is a multilateral deal between Iran and six other countries. The UN Security Council also ratified it. The deal is not between Iran and the US but Trump seems to be ignorant of this basic fact.

He is demanding that Iran should stop its missile development program that is entirely defensive in nature, and that it should stop supporting its allies in the region. These are illegal demands and are not part of the JCPOA. Iran has made clear it will not allow any changes to the deal.

Some European states — Britain, France, and to a lesser extent Germany — are siding with the US instead of upholding the letter and spirit of the agreement. French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on March 19 urged the European Union to adopt new sanctions against Iran over its alleged role in Syria and Yemen, as well as its missile program.

It is clear Western regimes cannot be trusted to uphold any agreement that they themselves sign. They are compulsive liars and cheats.
