The ME’s unexploded time bomb: ‘Independent’ Kurdistan

Editor

Political and diplomatic efforts have intensified in the lead-up to the proposed referendum on independence for Iraqi Kurdistan scheduled for September 25. The Kurds are scattered across the Muslim East in Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and Syria.

In Iraq, the Kurds have established a de facto independent state calling it the Kurdistan Provisional Government (KPG) since the US invaded and then destroyed Iraq in 2003. Naturally, the establishment of the KPG has not gone down well in Baghdad, seat of the federal government.

With Syria engulfed in a foreign-instigated war, the other countries — Iran, Iraq, and Turkey — have intensified efforts to prevent a referendum. If held and it results in an independent Kurdish state, this would have catastrophic consequences for the entire region.

While the Kurds have legitimate grievances that must be addressed in earnest, independence is not a solution to their problems. The Muslim East is already engulfed in many problems that are the direct result of its division imposed by the colonial powers Britain and France through the Sykes-Picot Agreement of 1916.

Unfortunately, the Kurds have allowed themselves to be manipulated by the Zionists, the principal source of trouble and instability in the region. The illegitimate Zionist entity and the US have realized that their plot to overthrow the government in Syria has failed.

Their Plan B is the division of Syria and Iraq along ethnic lines starting with the Kurds. The Kurds must not allow this diabolical plot to succeed.
