While the world is gradually waking up to the horrors visited upon the Rohingya community in Myanmar, some Muslim regimes are deliberately undermining efforts to help them.
The Myanmar regime under the grip of the brutal military and led by Aung San Suu Kyi, has adamantly refused to accept responsibility even while soldiers and machete wielding Buddhists go on a killing spree.
Children and women have been hacked to death; their homes have been burned, often with the occupants inside. Horrific pictures have emerged of burnt bodies; others hacked to death and yet other floating in rivers and paddy fields.
Fleeing for their lives and clutching their meager possessions, they have faced extreme hurdles even on the border with Bangladesh, a nominal Muslim country.
Bangladeshi Prime Minister Hasina Wajid is equally nasty. She is just as hostile to the Rohingyas as the Myanmar killers. She wants to have nothing to do with them and insists they must go back to Myanmar.
At the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), three Muslim countries are putting hurdles in the way to provide effective help to the Rohingya refugees.
Bangladesh, Indonesia and Malaysia are refusing to allow meaningful steps to be taken to address one of the greatest humanitarian disasters in the region. The UN has called the Rohingya Muslims the “most persecuted” minority in the world.
Why the Southeast Asia trio are so set against the Rohingya refugees? It seems, they are more interested in trade with Myanmar than worrying about their horrific plight.

Among Muslim countries, while the Arabian regimes have maintained their contemptuous attitude too engrossed in their own petty squabbles, Turkey has taken the lead.
Turkish President Recept Tayib Erdogan has not only spoken out against the mistreatment of Rohingyas, he also sent his wife Emina and son Bilal to the refugee camps in Bangladesh to evaluate the situation firsthand. Turkish Foreign Minister Mesut Cavosuglu was also on his way there from Baku, the Azeri capital, to evaluate the situation firsthand.
Cavosuglu said Turkey wanted for find a permanent solution to the Rohingya problem in Myanmar.
Even Norway has spoken out against the abuse and torture of Rohingyas. Norwegian Foreign Minister Borge Brende on September 6 expressed his government’s deep concern about escalating violence and the deteriorating humanitarian situation of the Rohingya.
He said “all groups must show restraint,” but stressed that “authorities, under the leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi, have a particular responsibility to protect civilians from abuses, to stop the violence and to ensure humanitarian access.”
An online petition to strip Suu Kyi of her Nobel Peace Prize because of her complicity in crimes against the Rohingyas has already attracted more than 360,000 signatures. The aim is to reach 500,000 signatures within the next day or so.
The disgraceful conduct of Suu Kyi, darling of the West when she was under house arrest, has exposed her true nature. She is a racist and bigot and has no regard or respect for human life or dignity.
She is a blot on the name of humanity.
