Since the failed coup attempt in July, Turkey has faced widespread purges and instability. While the armed forces have been most affected with the dismissal of more than 35% of senior officers, other institutions have not escaped cleansing either. The bureaucracy, judiciary, educational institutions and even the media have faced purges. President Erdogan’s opponents accuse him of conducting a witch-hunt. This concern is growing. Erdogan must act within the framework of the law, not out of pique, for his own sake, but more importantly for Turkey’s sake.
