US’ chronic meddling

Mohammad Khaku

For several months, tensions have simmered between President Donald Trump and the press and intelligence community. He has condemned journalists for “misstating” the size of the crowd at his inauguration, branding them as “among the most dishonest human beings on earth.” Trump’s natural belligerence notwithstanding, there are strong reasons why everyone should be concerned about the record of both the media and spy agencies.

One of the most alarming stories from the 2016 election is the “meddling” of Russia in the process. The hypocrisy of this complaint is striking given the long history of interference by the US in the affairs of other countries through financial support to leaders subservient to US interests, overthrow of democratically elected governments, dissemination of false information, assassinations, and occupation by US military forces. Doubtless, both the media and spy agencies deliberately peddle propaganda and disinformation at home in order to sway public opinion, and to destabilize or overthrow foreign governments abroad.
