Lessons from the Ukraine War

Editor

There are numerous lessons to be learnt from Ukraine’s experience facing a Russian military onslaught. The west, especially the US makes grand promises but when it comes to delivery, they leave ‘allies’ in the lurch. Ukraine is learning this lesson the hard way.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky naively believed the promises made to him by western rulers. US President Joe Biden is prepared to fight to the last Ukrainian against Russia but he will not send American soldiers to do the fighting. That is reserved for countries with few means of self-defence and are not nuclear powers: Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and Yemen.

In Afghanistan, the lightly-armed Taliban still defeated the Americans and chased them right out of Kabul. The Yankees are unlikely to venture into the Hindu Kush mountains any time soon, if at all. The Americans are now punishing the entire Afghan population through starvation. If you can’t beat them on the battlefield, starve them by stealing their wealth.

America-Nato regimes refused to send combat troops to Ukraine because they say they want to avoid direct military conflict with Russia. Similarly, a no-fly zone is ruled out despite repeated pleas by Zelensky. The US-Nato combine fear any such engagement could easily escalate into nuclear conflict. The message is clear: being a nuclear armed state acts as a strong deterrent against would-be aggressors. Islamic Iran, please take note.

The military conflict in Ukraine has also exposed, yet again, the raw racism of western regimes, their media outlets and even the Ukrainians seeking world sympathy. While white, blue-eyed blonde Ukrainians are welcomed, dark skinned Middle Easterners, Indians and Africans are shut out. Even Ukrainian police have been involved in throwing African students off trains, in a disgusting display of racism, to make room for white Ukrainians!

Further, the vicious lies being peddled by western regimes and the media have scaled new heights. Truth is always the first casualty of war but the lies being peddled by western regimes and their mouthpieces about Russia in Ukraine are unprecedented.

For instance, they alleged that Moscow sought arms from China. The insinuation was that Russia’s weapons were not performing well and military campaign had ground to a halt, hence the quest for Chinese weapons. The Chinese government spokesperson dismissed the report as “malicious propaganda”.

Further, the Kremlin spokesmen Dmitry Peskov announced on March 14 that “Russia has a sufficient potential for conducting the special military operation in Ukraine. The operation is proceeding in accordance with the original plan and will be completed on time and in full.” He also disclosed that Russian President Vladimir Putin had specifically ordered the armed forces to refrain from immediate assault on the cities to prevent heavy civilian casualty. The western media continues to misinterpret this as “failure” of the Russian army.

Were that true, Zelensky would not have agreed to Ukraine’s neutrality and no more insistence on joining Nato, that has been Russia’s demand all along. On March 16, a 15-point tentative agreement was drawn up including the above points. According to the Financial Times, the plan would include the Ukrainian government declaring neutrality and accepting limits on its armed forces.

The other lie being peddled in the media is that Russia might use biological weapons. Russian forces had earlier announced locating bio-labs in Ukraine. These were set up by the US and Israel in clear violation of the prohibition on biological weapons. Victoria Nuland, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, was forced to admit during her March 8 testimony before Congress that “Ukraine has biological research facilities, which, in fact, we are quite concerned that Russian troops, Russian forces may be seeking to gain control of.”

This raises the question about who is behind such labs in Ukraine? Biden’s Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the US “is in full compliance with its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Biological Weapons Convention and does not develop or possess such weapons anywhere.” Really?

On March 4, the French daily, Le Courrier des Stratèges revealed that there are 11 bio-labs in Ukraine linked to the US that “work with very dangerous pathogens”.

It continued: “With the support of the United States, the first biological center in Ukraine was opened on June 15, 2010, as part of the Mechnikov Anti-Plague Research Institute in Odessa in the presence of US Ambassador John Tefft. The Odessa center has been awarded a level to work with strains used in the development of biological weapons. In Ukraine alone in 2013, bio-labs were opened in Vinnytsia, Ternopil, Uzhhorod, Kyiv, Dnepropetrovsk, Simferopol, Kherson, Lviv, and Lugansk with US support.”

Might this explain the hysterical denunciations of Russia and President Vladimir Putin for exposing American criminal conduct? Biden has gone so far as to denounce Putin as a “war criminal”. It is clear that the Americans and their Nato allies have not been able to intimidate Russia through bluster. Even the much-hyped tripartite summit of G7, Nato and European Union on March 24 in Brussels came up with only setting up a task force to examine ways of reducing Europe’s dependence on Russian oil and gas. Will Putin be trembling with fear in the Kremlin?

Russian military tactics have concentrated on encircling cities to avoid civilian casualties and force them to surrender. This is evident in cities like Mariupol, Kharkiv, capital Kiev, Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro while Kherson has been taken over by Russian forces.

Additionally, in the south, Russian forces have taken a large swath of territory establishing a land corridor from Crimea to the Donbass region. Once the Russians take control of Odessa in the south west, Ukraine will be completely cut off from the Black Sea. This appears to be the Russian plan in order to ensure the safety of residents in the Donbass region that for all practical purposes in now a separate country, albeit recognized only by Russia.

The US-led unipolar world order is dead and buried. It is time for the warlords in Washington to recognize this reality. Failure to do so would only heap more humiliation on them.
