The Iranian parliament announced on January 18 that it is preparing a draft resolution on a “defense and security treaty for the Axis of Resistance.”
The treaty will include state and non-state entities, as reported by the middleeastmonitor.com.
Led by Iran, the informal Axis of Resistance (AR) alliance comprises Lebanon’s Hezbollah, Syria, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, AnsarAllah of Yemen and Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).
Formalizing it will be a significant symbolic political move in stepping outside of the Western-imposed nation state structure.
A formal treaty between the Axis of Resistance members will take some time to formulate and put implementation mechanisms in place.
Nevertheless, the fact that the Axis of Resistance is being discussed as a formal political alliance is groundbreaking.
It manifests the existence of a determined political paradigm willing to challenge the artificial set up imposed by the Sykes–Picot agreement.
While the alliance will initially likely operate within the nation state framework, it will drastically reconfigure the theoretical foundations of the Sykes–Picot division of the Middle East.
More than a century old, Sykes-Picot is outdated for the evolving realities of the region.
Iran’s official formulation of the Resistance alliance can significantly shift the political balance in the region.
It will pull the political “carpet’ from underneath the feet of the US and its surrogates.
Formalization of the alliance will mean that Washington-backed regimes will be further delegitimized.
There will be another route through which people can establish their independent agency and identity.
For the time being, the primary route of expanding influence in the region is through regimes that have allegiances to external neo-colonialist powers.
Formalization of the AR alliance will present a practical political formula which will bypass Western established regimes and imposed political “norms”.
With Hamas and Islamic Jihad formally in the alliance, it will significantly weaken the Sunni-Shia sectarian narrative peddled by NATO and its regional surrogates.
It will also humiliate Washington’s regional puppets who while possessing state power, have succumb to Israel’s bullying and recognized its apartheid occupation of Palestine.
Formalization of the resistance alliance will also serve as a psychological boost to the overall political climate in West Asia.
Currently, events revolve around indigenous socio-political forces attempting to reclaim their sovereignty from neo-colonial powers.
An alternative formalized framework is a necessity at the political, social and cultural levels.
