Rifaat Al-Asad: From the Butcher Of Hama To Role As Opposition Figure

Rifaat al-Asad (d. January 2026 in Dubai) gained notoriety as the ‘butcher of Hama’ in 1982. Later he became an opposition figure to his nephew Bashar al-Asad’s government. How his transformation was accepted without question reflects opportunism at its worst.
