For the second time in a week, Israel carried out missile strikes at Syria’s civilian airport in Aleppo.
The Syrian foreign ministry called the latest strikes on September 6 a “war crime”.
Syria’s official news agency SANA said that Israeli jets launched a number of missiles from across the Mediterranean Sea at the airport.
The country’s Transportation Ministry later announced that all flights were being redirected to Damascus International Airport, as Aleppo airport was “out of service” following the airstrikes.
A week earlier (August 31), Israeli airstrikes had targeted Aleppo airport’s runway and radio navigation system.
Another airstrike that night struck a similar navigation system at Damascus International Airport.
“The recurring Israeli attacks, especially the systematic and deliberate targeting of civilian objects in Syria— the latest of which was the targeting of Aleppo International Airport on September 6—amounts to an act of aggression and a war crime according to international law,” the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said in a statement on September 7.
The ministry statement said the Israeli regime “must be held to account” for the latest aerial aggression in the war-ravaged country that has faced foreign-backed terrorist attacks since 2011.
“The occupying Israeli regime is once again threatening peace and security in the region, endangering and intimidating civilians, and jeopardizing the safety of civil aviation in Syria and the region,” the statement noted.
“Syria will exercise its legitimate right to defend its territories and people through all available means, and to ensure that Israeli authorities will be held to account for their crimes,” it added.
Syrian air defenses managed to intercept several Israeli missiles, according to SANA.
In the past, the zionist regime had targeted Damascus International airport on several occasions.
What is the significance of Aleppo airport that the zionists are now targeting?
The British news agency Reuters, quoting regional diplomatic and intelligence sources reported that Israel istrying to disrupt Tehran’s increasing use of aerial supply lines to deliver arms to allies in Syria and Lebanon, especially Hizbullah.
Aleppo, according to these sources, has emerged as an important supply route.
Tehran has a well-established ground transportation system to supply military equipment to its forces and allied fighters in Syria and beyond.
A number of important nodes along the route between Iran-Iraq, Iraq-Syria, and Syria-Lebanon are fully secure.
What the latest zionist aggression indicates is their nervousness because the Resistance Front is becoming much more effective.
Inside occupied Palestine, the zionists are facing stiff resistance from the Palestine Islamic Jihad (PIJ) that has firmly established its presence in Jenin and Nablus.
Palestinian prisoners have launched successful hunger strikes to challenge Israel’s illegal actions forcing it to back down.
The most prominent case is that of Khalil Awawdeh, the 40-year-old father of four from Al-Khalil who ended his six-month hunger strike on August 31 after winning his fight to be released from Israel’s ‘administrative detention’.
Under this lawless practice, Palestinians can be held for six months without charge or trial.
A military court can extend the detention by another six months.
The illegal administrative detention policy can result in Palestinians being held for years.
This was the case with Awawdeh as well who has spent a total of 13 years in Israeli prisons.
His latest ordeal began in December 2021 when he was arrested from his home.
In March 2022, he embarked on his hunger strike demanding release.
His case gained international attention as he was on the verge of death when the zionist regime was forced to relent.
Already facing a serious challenge from the Palestinian resistance, the zionists feared that if Awawdeh died in prison, it would prove very difficult for them to face the resulting fallout.
Hence their retreat in his case.
Awawdeh remains in hospital to recover because he has lost so much weight.
He cannot stand, much less walk.
Israel’s attacks on civilian airports in Syria is a sign of desperation.
It cannot prevent the Resistance Front from confronting the zionist entity and ultimately defeating it.
