If the ulama adhere to the Qur’an and the Sunnah, they are a blessing but unfortunately many of them have succumbed to the temptations of the dunya, as Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradawi’s recent behaviour has shown.
The global Islamic movement faces a serious problem. The people — the ‘ulama — they are supposed to look up to for guidance are turning out to be a disaster. In his hard-hitting but sadly all too accurate analysis, Br. Zafar Bangash touches a raw nerve in the Ummah (Crescent, July 2013). This is not to suggest that all ‘ulama have fallen to this depth but when well-known figures like Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradawi become accustomed to comfortable living and kowtow to the demands of the likes of the Qatari Amir — no paragon of wisdom, he — then it points to a looming disaster!
