Libya’s ‘elections’ fail to attract voters

Editor

Parliamentary elections were held in Libya on June 25 but few people bothered to cast ballot. They had more weighty things on their mind: the growing security problem, lack of food and fuel and total chaos that has gripped the country since the US-Nato alliance “liberated” it from the clutches of Colonel Qaddafi.

Three years after Colonel Muammar Qaddafi’s brutal overthrow and lynching, Libya continues to suffer the deathly blows of unruly militias. This is not to suggest Qaddafi’s was a democratic or popular government but what has followed is infinitely worse.

The June 25 parliamentary election, second since Qaddafi’s lynching, was treated by most Libyans with contempt. They know the reality of life: there is no safety or security; food and fuel shortages are widespread and people fear to venture outside after dark. They are even afraid to go to mosques for Maghrib and Isha Salat.

There are rival militia gangs waging turf wars in different parts of the country. The oil-rich country has been reduced to penury. Long line-ups at gas stations are the norm. Militias have been stealing and selling oil to such predatory powers as Italy and France. These Western thieves feel no shame in plundering the resources of other people even in the twenty-first century.

The elections were ‘party-less’ and the discredited General National Congress renamed the House of Representatives still failed to attract many voters.

There is no law and order, only chaos. Rival militia gangs have aligned themselves with predatory foreign powers for survival.

The syndicate of international criminals led by the US and its Nato allies France, Britain, Italy, Canada and Turkey among others, are directly responsible for the mayhem in Libya. Their rulers should be put on trial for war crimes.
