Highlighting the plight of Kashmiris

Iqbal Ahmed Butt

The people of Kashmir have suffered a great deal over many decades but their plight is not well known. A reader welcomes the Crescent’s attention to this vital issue.

Thank you for your report on Kashmir (Crescent, December 2013). Muslims around the world have virtually forgotten the oppressed people of Kashmir that have and continue to suffer at the hands of Indian occupation troops. Even while Muslims express support for suffering Muslims in Palestine, Chechnya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria or any other place, they must not forget the Kashmiris either.

Since 1989, more than 100,000 people have been killed and at least 10,000 women have been raped. These are our Muslim sisters whose honour has been violated.

The people of Kashmir have suffered more than six decades of Indian state brutality. Since 1989, more than 100,000 people have been killed and at least 10,000 women have been raped. These are our Muslim sisters whose honour has been violated.

Muslims, especially those in the West, can do a lot more for Kashmir, than what they are currently doing. They can organize protests outside Indian embassies and consulates to expose their crimes. They must also link up with human rights organizations as well as antiwar groups to broaden understanding about the long-standing occupation of Kashmir . Finally, students at universities must adopt this as their own cause, much like the BDS movement against the occupiers of Palestine.
