California killings and the rise of violence in US society

Crescent International

Violence, it is said is as American as apple pie. Violence is also glorified by Hollywood. It came home with yet another example when Elliot Rodger, son of a Hollywood director, shot and killed several people and injured dozens more before shooting himself in the head. He had posted his murderous plans on You Tube!

A college teen in an idyllic California beach town near Santa Barbara, went on a killing rampage on Friday, May 23, 2014, killing six people. Elliot Rodger, son of the Hollywood director Peter Rodger, stabbed three people outside of his apartment complex in Isla Vista, and then shot three more dead with semiautomatic handguns. Thirteen more people were injured. The rampage ended when Rodger shot himself in the head and smashed his black BMW into another car.

Rodger’s shooting is another in a long list of violence that has been peaking in US societies. Rodger posted several Youtube videos describing his plans to shoot people in vengeance for his lack of popularity, and the fact that he believed that girls were not attracted by him.

These psychopathic tendencies finally caught the attention of the police, who paid him a visit in April 2014. However, Rodger was able to talk his way out of the situation. If he had been of a different race or ethnicity, the response would no doubt have been very different.

The Huffington Post describes the last video Rodger posted. “In [his] YouTube video, Rodger sits in a car and looks at the camera, laughing often, and says he is going to take his revenge against humanity. He describes loneliness and frustration because ‘girls have never been attracted to me,’ and says, at age 22, he is still a virgin. The video, which is almost seven minutes long, appears scripted.”

“I'll take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you. You will finally see that I am, in truth, the superior one, the true alpha male,” he says in the video.

The mass murder can be counted amongst recent incidents—including in Newtown, Conn., Aurora, Colo., and Columbia, Maryland—in which a young, white male, mentally disturbed, has tried to shoot as many people as possible to avenge some perceived slight or societal injustice.

The increasing frequency of murderous sprees by psychotic young men has rendered the public blasé to a certain degree. News agencies described Rodger’s rampage as a “spasm of terror,” which illustrates the double standard of labeling violence inside US society.

Had Rodger been a young Muslim man, his shooting would have been described as a “terrorist attack” and Muslims would be demonized on television and on radio talk shows for weeks.
