Afghanistan-Pakistan relations

Tahir Mangal

If there is peace in Afghanistan, there will be peace in Pakistan says letter-writer Tahir Mangal.

There appears to be considerable movement in improving relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan. This is a positive development that every sincere Muslim everywhere should applaud. Afghanistan has suffered decades of wars devastating the country and inflicting immense damage on its traumatized people. Muslims should not only respond to crises — wars, devastation caused by floods or earthquakes — but also to the needs of fellow Muslims by creating an environment of trust and understanding. There is little doubt that Pakistan’s destiny is intimately tied up with that of Afghanistan and indeed further afield equally with Iran and Turkey. Leaders in both countries should strive to overcome mistrust and move toward working together for the benefit of their people. Peace would bring its dividend not only to Afghanistan and Pakistan but also the entire region.
