All indications point toward an end to the decades long suffering of the Afghan people. The Americans have been involved in talks not only with the Taliban, recognizing them as a major force in the country, but also with Russians and Chinese. As Afghanistan’s neighbors, the last two have pledged to work for peace. This is a good sign. The Afghans — a vast majority of them extremely poor — have suffered decades of externally imposed wars as well as internal ethnic conflicts. Despite their extreme poverty, they remain defiant and dignified.
The Taliban are involved in talks with the Americans to have all foreign troops leave the country. It is extremely important that the Afghans do not start fighting among themselves once foreign troops are out. They should use their traditional process of the Loya Jirga to sort out their differences. Acceptance of tribal, ethnic, and linguistic differences would be a good starting point. After all, they are all Muslims.
