The Ikhwan and the “power of the street”

Afeef Khan

Shawwal 24, 14342013-09-01

The Ikhwan may have been pushed out of power by a brutal military coup and have offered thousands of martyrs, but if they can show their staying power in the streets, they can defeat the military and bring it to its knees.

As much as is said from the mimbar, it appears that what is said from the anti-mimbar is louder and more pronounced; but with Allah’s guidance and assistance we will continue to do and to say what has to be said and what has to be done and Allah in His own way will amplify the truth and He will put an end to the lies and towards this end we will press on with our duty to expose the grand lies about we the Muslims that are being systematically presented to the world and to public opinion. We continue to say that we are not terrorists and we are not jelly beans. What meant by the loud propaganda in our time is to convince Muslims and non- Muslims alike that Islam is a religion of terror. One of the ayaat that some of them cite to prove this point is an ayah in surah Al Baqarah. How does this ayah work itself into English?

Sectarianism Part 3

Muhammad H. al-'Asi

Shawwal 06, 14332012-08-24

You know that we have been, in the previous thirty odd years, concentrating our jum’ah khutbahs on the affairs that have escaped attention and eluded our will power in the past hundreds of years. This khutbah this Friday you may say is a transitional khutbah from the depths of the month of Ramadhan to the range of the issues that bedevil the Islamic existence in today’s world. The Prophet of Allah says in a hadith a Mu’min or a committed Muslim who is strong is more liked and is better than a committed Muslim who is weak… Being that in today’s world you and I- just the average human being- think about strength in terms of physical strength (or) the accumulation of materialistic power, so if a person is citing this hadith (and) being that our minds are conditioned to understand certain words in a certain way all of a sudden we- no one is taking issue with any word in the Prophet’s hadith- but what we fail to understand is the Islamic definition of who is strong.

As you are aware there is a heightened and a saturated body of words out there pertaining to the Islamic political process. There are elections taking place, there are movement, i.e. Islamic movements that are moving into positions of responsibility i.e. political responsibilities and state offices and all of this that you are very well familiar with; and in this context, there’s nothing wrong in looking at ourselves. We do this from time-to-time. There’s nothing wrong in taking a very objective and very accurate look at our own selves in one area at least and that area is the ability to speak truth to power. This is an area that we have not been very adapt at therefore we are in need of direction and light from Allah and His Prophet. In probably the first instance in which this is demonstrated in a striking way in the Qur’an is when Ibrahim (alayhi as salaam) comes into contact with one of these, (what we would call in today’s words), kings or sovereigns or potentates or presidents.

Muslim public mind, absence Part 7

Muhammad H. al-'Asi

Jumada' al-Ula' 25, 14322011-04-29

We observe this Friday while the Muslims in the world are in a state of instability. We know that Friday is a day of taqwa. Friday services are a reminder of taqwa. The Friday khutbah revolves around the concept of taqwa. This taqwa is a constant relationship/heightened awareness by the committed Muslim towards Allah as Authority/Power. We read Allah’s guiding Book. We read about Allah’s guiding Prophet; but reading if not related to reality is an exercise in futility. If we were to demonstrate our true relationship with Allah we would realise that we belong to a history/narrative/experience that lives on to our day. We are, in our historical character, (culture/ethnicity/race/nationality/gender aside- these are marginal issues), the important issue is that we are a continuation of the struggles of Allah’s Prophet.

One of the components that is absent from the total mind/consciousness of today’s Muslims is that they do not consider themselves having an enemy. This is one of the most serious flaws of today’s Muslims even though they read the Qur’an and the Qur’an, Allah and His Prophet are telling them otherwise. This element of animosity/hostility/belligerence that some people here in this world/life express to other people here in this world/life is a fact that cannot be ignored. What we see happening here in our immediate surroundings and what we view unfolding thousands of miles away is a substantiation of this absent fact- absent from the conscious thinking of current Muslims. If we were to listen and understand what Allah says to us, He, in this ayah in the first few pages of Surah Al Baqarah is speaking to the first conscious/rational human creation along with the Iblisi/Shaytaani element.

hese days- these times actually present us with an opportunity to serve Allah and to become His will on earth but there’s a caveat; we can’t do so if we cannot identify His guidance and the meanings of His guidance to us. It becomes impossible to do Allah’s will in the peculiar/ obvious circumstances that we find ourselves in. There’s an ayah in the Qur’an that takes to task those who are incapable of managing the meanings of the Qur’an.

Muslim public mind, absence Part 3

The khutbah on Fridays at this time every week has been, (in a sense), a bridge between Allah’s revealed instructions to man’s condition on earth with the necessary reminder of Allah’s power presence in our lives. The Muslims in the world now are in a state of flux- as anyone who is tuned in can understand. There are movements of populations, a stirring of the conscience and a rejection of the status quo. It is not easy to say that our mental absence for so long has contributed to our physical reactions today. We have laboured for so long this position on this day to try and make headway as much as stimulating the Muslims to think because that is, (in the humble opinion of yours sincerely), one of the major issues that have contributed to the conditions that we, (meaning all the Muslims in the world not we the local Muslims (or) national group of people etc.), are in today.

There are very important movements of people that we watch everyday or whenever the opportunity comes to present itself. People in such countries as Egypt, Yemen, Tunisia just to name a few places that we- with our God-given minds are trying to think through- if we do that because there are many of us who don’t even do that! The problem is not a recent problem. The problem has its historical depth. With Allah’s help, to begin we want to draw your attention with the fact that when Allah revealed the information that we have to the Prophet who we have He did not refer to it only as al kitab. There are many ayaat in the Qur’an that refer to the Qur’an itself as al kitab or the divine writ but He also refers to it as al hikmah. In about twenty times in the Qur’an in Allah’s words, His revelation is described as hikmah.

We are human beings and our human nature sometimes catches up with us. Some of us expect fast results. This is nothing new and it shouldn’t be anything surprising Allah describes the human nature that you and I and everyone else has by saying The human social being-you and I- were created with a propensity to have things done fast… (Surah Al Ambiya’ verse 37)

Terror alerts: Canadian Muslims losing rights as US exploits the political utility of fear

Tahir Mahmoud

Dhu al-Qa'dah 08, 14242004-01-01

Having discovered the political utility of fear, US officials miss no opportunity to invoke the dreaded terror alert, thus keeping the American public scared enough to have no time to think about the real problems confronting them...
