Shaykh Zakzaky’s Long Ordeal

Editor

Since the Nigerian army’s assault on the headquarters of Shaykh Ibrahim Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), in December 2015, the Shaykh and his wife continue to languish in prison. Both were badly injured and continue to be in poor health. Proper medical care is denied them. The Nigerian army slaughtered more than 1,000 members of IMN in cold blood. The Shaykh also lost three of his sons in the assault.

What was Shaykh Zakzaky’s “crime”? He called for unity among Muslims and for Nigeria to not kowtow to Zionist Israel. The IMN also organized the largest Quds Day rallies anywhere in the world outside of Islamic Iran. It was this growing popularity of Quds rallies that alarmed the Nigerian regime, its military, and the Zionists.

The Nigerian regime is also close to Bani Saud who specialize in spreading poisonous sectarian propaganda in the Ummah. Not surprisingly, Bani Saud’s embrace of the Zionists has come out into the open.

Shaykh Zakzaky has waged a legal battle for his release. Last July, nearly 100 members of IMN were released from prison through a court order. They were found not guilty of the charges against them.

The Nigerian regime continues to use delaying tactics against Shaykh Zakzaky. At each court hearing, the regime’s lawyers ask for a postponement. This clearly indicates that the regime has no case against the Shaykh; he is obviously being persecuted for his principled political activism. He should be released immediately without conditions.
