Canadian-born Omar Khadr, child prisoner-turned adult, may soon be coming home from Guantanamo.
This is not because of the effort of Canadian government. Were it left to the rightwing ruling party, it would have Khadr rot there forever. The Americans themselves want him out because his continued detention — despite being illegal as Omar is innocent of the allegations against him — is now proving a liability. The US cannot make plea deals with other detainees unless Omar’s deal is honored. Omar’s plight reflects US lawlessness and brutality at its worst.
