Al-Saud family locked in a brutal internal fight

Al-Saud family locked in a brutal internal fight A Saudi princess imprisoned in the maximum security al-Hayer jail near Riyadh has made a rare public appeal to the king and crown prince for her release, citing “deteriorating” heath concerns. This was reported by the Washington-based Al-Monitor news site. Al-Monitor wrote: “Princess Basmah bint Saud, a 56-year-old businesswoman and an outspoken royal family member, made a rare public appeal to the king and crown prince for her release from a high-security prison, citing her ‘deteriorating’ health.”

In the same report the web portal also highlighted that “the princess claimed she was ‘thrown into prison’ after being ‘abducted without an explanation’ along with one of her daughters.”

Since Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) was appointed crown prince in June 2017, he has discarded the kingdom’s unwritten political rules by going after his own family members. He is doing this in order to eliminate all rivals, real or imagined, to become king. There are no red lines in the medieval kingdom when it comes to brutality and corruption. However, in a conservative society like Saudi Arabia, the detention of women is often a last and desperate resort. The fact that MbS has openly crossed the red line by throwing women from his own family into prison, highlights the gruesome and despotic nature of the Bani Saud clan.
